Frequently asked questions
The app
What does Have a Gander do?
You rate the films and series you watch, in two taps. From those ratings it learns your taste, predicts what you will make of anything else, and explains why. It deals you a deck of suggestions to swipe through, lets you compare tastes with friends you invite, and settles movie night: everyone swipes the same shortlist on their own phone until you have a match. It is an early build; the home page keeps track of what works and what’s next.
Where do I get the app?
Have a Gander is in a test on Android. It is not in Google Play yet: write to support@haveagander.app and we send you a link to the preview, which you install yourself. Google Play follows after the test, and an iPhone version comes later.
Why does the app say “Rated”?
That is its working title. The preview may still show it here and there until the new name has made it into every corner of the app. Same app, same account.
Can I use it in my browser?
There is a version that runs in a browser, and friends without the app can join your movie night from the link, signed in with Google. It will live at app.haveagander.app; until then, the link you get from a movie night takes you there.
How does it predict my score?
After you have rated a few titles, it compares what you are looking at with the films you rated, weighting the ones most like it, and puts the answer on your own scale: a 7 from a tough critic and a 7 from a generous one mean what they should. Tap Why this guess on a title to see which of your ratings pulled the number up or down. It gets better with every rating, and it can still be wrong.
How does a movie night work?
Open Movie night and start one. Share the six-letter code or the link. Everyone swipes the same deck, yes or no, each on their own phone, and every card shows their own predicted score. The first title you all say yes to wins; with no perfect match, the app names the best compromise. A movie night stays open for 12 hours.
Where does the film information come from?
Titles, posters, cast and crowd scores come from TMDB, The Movie Database. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
Friends
How do I add a friend?
Open Friends and tap Invite a friend to share your invite link, or enter a friend’s code. Joining someone’s movie night can also make you friends, if they confirm it.
What can my friends see?
Your name and picture, your ratings, your watchlist and your taste match with them. If they are in a movie night with you, they also see how you voted on the top picks. Never your email address.
Someone is bothering me.
Open their profile under Friends and choose Report, or Remove and reset my link to remove them and stop your old invite link from working. We read every report and act on it, usually within a few working days. If anyone is in danger, call 112.
